Venue

CBMI 2009 will be hosted at the island of Crete, Chania, one of the most exciting Greek destinations, at KAM - Mediterranean Centre of Architecture. The latter was settled by Chania municipality in 1996 and is situated since 2002 at Great Arsenali, the old port of Chania. The venue building is the last building on the west side of a complex of 17 shipyards. Construction of the building was begun in 1585 by the Commissioner General Alvise Grimani. The thickness of its walls, its isolation from the rest of the “Neoria”, as well as the public services which were periodically housed there may account for the name “Great”.

The world famous island of Crete is located to the South part of Aegean Sea just above Libyan sea. The prefecture of Chania is the western most division of the island of Crete covering an area of 2376 square km and with a population of 150,387 residents (census 2001). The city of Chania (IPA [xa'ɲa], Greek: Χανιά, also transliterated as Hania) is the second largest city of Crete and surely is one of the two most popular places to visit when on Crete. Chania is well known for the Venetian Harbor, the old port, with characteristic narrow streets with old buildings, museums, churches, crafts shops and waterfront restaurants. More information about the city of Chania and west Crete can be found at http://www.chania.gr/ and http://www.west-crete.com/.

Especially during the summer period, the island of Crete is easily accessible by many flight and sea connections (details are available at http://www.chaniacrete.gr/). There are frequent flights from Athens or Thessaloniki International Airports and there are many charter direct flights from several countries. There are fast ferries connecting Chania with the harbor of Athens, Piraeus.

The city of Chania offers a wide variety of quality hotels, unique hotel apartments and elegant suite hotels. Besides the style and character of authentic island architecture, the accommodation on Chania is perfectly organized with every modern convenience to meet the requirements of today's travelers. The workshop organizers will arrange special deals with local accommodation agencies for CBMI 2009 participants. Accommodation reservation will be available soon through the workshop site. Prices will range, starting from around 70 € up to luxury apartments. A comprehensive list of hotels is already available at http://www.hania-hotels.gr.
